Salthouse - Norfolk Holiday & Tourism
Salthouse is a conservation village steeped in history and its location on the North Norfolk coast in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty invites exploration.
Tumuli containing Bronze Age relics, Roman bricks and pottery, records of the Viking occupation and the Norman Conquest are evidence of man’s involvement in this area.
The economy of Salthouse has long held a connection with the sea. Salt stored and shipped from here gave the village its name.
The seas encroachment of the marshes over the centuries has closed the navigation channels which once carried seagoing trading vessels. However, the marshes and surrounding countryside are still of huge significance for the economy
of the area.
The unspoilt natural beauty draws visitors from all over who are looking to escape the pace of modern life and enjoy the wealth of what is on offer.
There are no amusement arcades or the commercial exploitation one would find in many seaside resorts, but Salthouse has a welcoming pub, the Dun Cow, beside the village green and a crab shop which has been selling shellfish for more than thirty years.
Salthouse is a world away from hustle of City life and yet it is not much more than a two-hour drive from the traffic jams of the M25.
The magnificent church of St Nicholas is situated in an elevated position and dominates the view of the village from every vantage point. St Nicholas is the patron saint of children and of seafarers.
The Church’s connection with the sea is shown by the etchings of sailing ships on the choir stalls. Since 2001 it has housed a month long contemporary art exhibition as part of the North Norfolk Exhibition project and is recognised as a key event in Norfolk’s arts and cultural calendar.
Tourism is now a significant part of everyday life in North Norfolk. Many visitors come to visit the internationally important nature reserves, but no matter what the interest no one coming to this corner of England can fail to appreciate the slower pace of life and the benefit of being able to take a deep breath of fresh air and savour the peace and tranquillity of the area.
